Creating an Entry

Let's create your first Entry!

  1. Click the orange + Create Entry button in the lower-right corner.
  2. You can create an Entry with a photo, video, audio clip, or file (PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel). You can use media you've already created or, if you're using a smartphone or tablet with a camera, capture a new photo. You can also create an Entry without media. Photos and files can always be added later.
  3. Choose the classification best suited for the Entry. The classification you select determines which data fields will be available to describe the item. Many classifications include sub-classifications, allowing you to choose either a broad category or a more specific one. Once you have made your selection, click Done in the upper-right corner.
  4. Add a Name / Title to the Entry. If you wish, you may also add a description in the field below the photo or file. When you are finished, click Next in the upper-right corner.
  5. Continue editing the Entry and complete as many data fields as you wish. The Name/Title field is the only required field. All other information is optional, and you can always return later to edit your Entry and add more details.
  6. When you are finished, click Create in the upper-right corner. You will return to the thumbnail view, where your new Entry will be displayed.

Cataloging new acquisitions is not always a straightforward process. Many museums have backlogs of objects that need to be cataloged, as well as objects that lack documentation related to their acquisition. For tips on managing these situations, explore the MasterIt resources below.
